Resetting During a Firefight at the Net

I wanted to share these great tips from Callie Smith about how to reset if you get into a firefight at the NVZ. When you’re stepping onto the court prepared—with the right gear in place—it’s easier to stay focused in high-pressure moments like a firefight..

  • Get into ready position: knees bent, feet about shoulder-width apart and on the balls of your fee

  • Keep your paddle tip above your wrist

  • Meet the ball with your paddle out in front, don’t punch at the ball. Staying in control at the net starts before the point even begins. Having everything you need—paddle, towel, water, and essentials—organized and within reach helps you stay mentally focused when the pace picks up.

  • Bring your elbows up and away from your body, bringing the paddle closer to your chest

The result should be a soft, un-attackable ball that bounces safely in the kitchen. This is a great way to neutralize speed-ups and drives and get back to dinking. The best players don’t just practice their technique—they prepare for it. A well-organized bag means no distractions, no scrambling—just the confidence to reset, refocus, and play your best.
