Beat the Bangers! – Part 2
They are everywhere and we cannot provide enough Tips and Support for when you go up against: the bangers!
These players rely on hard, fast shots that can catch you off guard if you’re not prepared. But don’t worry! I’m here to share some effective strategies that will help you take control of the game and play with confidence.
- Use Soft Shots (Dinks and Drops)
When facing bangers, it’s time to embrace the softer side of pickleball!
- Dinks: Slow down the pace with dinks at the kitchen line. Bangers often struggle with these softer shots because they can’t unleash their power. Keep your shots controlled and precise, and watch them hesitate.
- Third-Shot Drop: A well-placed third-shot drop that lands softly in the kitchen area forces your opponent to return a softer shot. This gives you the opportunity to dictate the pace of the rally.
- Focus on Placement, Not Power
Instead of trying to out-hit your opponent, focus on where you’re placing your shots.
- Target Their Feet: Aiming at their feet makes it difficult for bangers to respond with force, forcing them to hit upward and reducing their power.
- Hit Toward the Sidelines: Hitting toward the sidelines forces them to move laterally, disrupting their rhythm and making it challenging for them to generate strong returns.
- Vary Spin and Speed
Keep your banger opponent on their toes by mixing things up.
- Add Spin: Incorporate topspin or underspin into your shots. Spin shots are tougher for bangers to control and can lead to errors if they’re too aggressive.
- Mix Up the Pace: Alternate between fast and slow shots. This keeps them guessing and off-balance, giving you the upper hand.
- Stay Close to the Kitchen Line
Positioning is key!
By staying close to the non-volley zone, you limit their reaction time. This forces them into uncomfortable situations, significantly reducing the effectiveness of their power shots.
- Defensive Blocking
Develop your defensive skills to handle their hard-hitting shots effectively.
Practice blocking volleys by absorbing the power of their shots and returning a controlled, soft shot. Not only does this neutralize their strength, but it also sets you up to regain control of the point.
- Force Long Rallies
Bangers thrive on quick points, so your goal is to extend the rallies.
By consistently using soft shots and maintaining control, you can frustrate your opponent, forcing them into mistakes or pushing them out of their comfort zone.
By implementing these strategies, you can turn the tables on those hard-hitting bangers. Remember, it’s not just about power; it’s about smart play and control. Stay confident, and enjoy the game! You’ve got this!
